Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson, a jazz musician and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Ohio, Chillicothe 20 February 1937, to Olden Wilson, an ironworker who had been employed for a considerable period as housekeeper. Nancy was the eldest of six children. Nancy was inspired by her father's music taste and the records that were played in her family home. Nancy knew that she was going to become a performer by the time she was just four years old. She began developing her talents by participating in the choir at church. The show was on television in her 15th year and then began performing regularly on the tv show Skyline Melodies while still in high school. In the same year, she began working at nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she had graduated high school, and then matriculated in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to sing. The first album she recorded was with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. They performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy released her debut recording via Dot Records during the time she was with the group. Cannonball adderley encouraged her to travel into New York in order to improve her career. She visited The Big Town, New York in 1959. She was commissioned to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx, where Adderley's agent had seen her. Her first album was focused on R&B however, under Adderley's influence, she embraced jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley collaborated in 1962, which allowed her to climb on the charts. The year 1963 was when she scored the biggest success through Tell Me the Truth. The performance brought her to the stage in the New York Coconut Grove in 1963. It was the most crowded in America's nightclub.
