Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Jazz musician Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award-winner was born on February 20 1937 in Chillicothe Ohio to iron-worker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as a domestic servant. Nancy was the youngest of six children. Nancy loved listening to records from her father as well as his enthusiasm for music. By the age of four, she knew she would like to become an accomplished musician. She developed her musical talent through participating in choirs of the church. When she won a talent contest in a television show when she was 15 years old, she began to appear regularly on Skyline Melodies, while still at high school. In the nightclubs she started working at age 15. Nancy was just 17 when she graduated highschool. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - now Central State University - for one term, Nancy left to be a professional performer. In 1956, she recorded her debut album along with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. They toured together between 1956 and 1958. Nancy released her first album in the band's studio with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball Adderley advised her to move in New York to further her professional career. She moved there to The Big Town at the end of 1959. Within one month, she got a gig singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club on Boston Road in The Bronx the place where her agent heard her, and she was signed. His agent signed her with Capitol in 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess Who I Saw today Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. Adderley encouraged her to shift away from R&B to music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 helped to bring her to the forefront as well as her hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963. The performance led her to a spot at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, which was America's biggest nightclub.
