Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. Nancy Wilson was born on 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe Ohio, to Olden Wilson who was a worker at an ironworks and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic worker. Nancy was the youngest of six kids. Nancy was influenced by her father's music taste and the records that were played in her family home. Nancy knew that she was going to be a singer at the age of 4 years old. She developed her talents by participating in the choir at church. In her early teens, she won a talent show on TV and began appearing on the Skyline Melodies Tv Show while being in High School. The same year, she began to work in nightclubs. Nancy graduated high school aged 17 and enrolled in the Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a full year. After that, she left to pursue a job as a professional musician. In 1956, she recorded her first album with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. They performed together from 1956 through 1958. Nancy released her first album in the band's studio with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball adderley encouraged her to travel to New York in order to increase her fame. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in 1959. She was commissioned to perform in The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx, where Adderley's agent had heard her. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess Who I Saw today The records she released were also successful. Capitol issued 5 Nancy Wilson albums in two years. At first, she focused on rhythm and blues, under Adderley's influence she moved away from R&B and embraced jazz and torch songs. Nancy Wilson's collaboration in 1962 with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top and, in 1963, she had her debut hit Tell Me the Truth. She was offered a job in New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's top club.
