Her father was a fan of music and loved to play records in the family. This had a great influence on her as a child. As a young girl she was already able to establish a strong sense of her identity and the things she wanted to be. Church choirs encouraged her to develop this talent. When she won a talent contest on television when she was 15, she started to appear regularly on Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. The same year, she began to work in nightclubs. Nancy dropped out of Central State University in Ohio after matriculating for an entire year. The first time she recorded was in Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band, who she performed with from 1956 to 1958. While in the group Nancy recorded her first album on Dot Records. Cannonball told her she should move into New York and go to The Big Town for the rest of her career. She was commissioned to perform for The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx and there was a place where Adderley's agent had heard her. A contract was formalized with Capitol Records in 1960. In 1960, she debuted with the song. Guess Who You Saw Today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. She initially focused on blues and rhythm under Adderley's influence, she began to move away from R&B and began to embrace music from jazz and torch. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley formed a band in 1962. This helped push her up the charts. In 1963, she had her greatest success through Tell Me the Truth. This brought her a gig in New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she quickly became a legend.
