Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, a ironworker and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the oldest of six kids. Nancy loved listening to her dad's records and his enthusiasm for music. She already knew she would be a singer at the age of 4 years old. She developed her skills by performing in the church choir. While still in high-school her appearances with Skyline Melodies. That same year, Nancy began to perform at nightclubs. Nancy, then 17, had graduated high school, and then matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to sing. She made her first recording in Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band, who she performed with from 1956 until 1958. In the band, Nancy recorded her first album with Dot Records. Cannonball Aderley suggested she make the move in New York so as to improve her career. In 1959 Nancy made the move to The Big Town. In just a few months she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road near The Bronx. The representative of Adderley saw her singing and instantly signed her. Following that year it led to her being booked at New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
