Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best recognized under the stage name Queen Latifah. The work of Queen Latifah on television, film as well as music has earned numerous accolades. These include an Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was the daughter of the Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was born and raised within Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of ten. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic school within Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic word that means "delicate and compassionate". Her cousin gave it to her at the age of eight. Being a tall girl, at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward for the basketball team at her high school. She sang the song home from The musical The Wiz in a high school play. Latifah was the first to begin beatboxing for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah joined the original Flavor Unit group, which included a number of MCs and DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the song. It was signed by Latifah and dropped her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
